TRADITIONAL CLOTHING AROUND THE WORLD

TRADITIONAL CLOTHING AROUND THE WORLD

All around the world people wear different clothing and fashion has nothing to do with it. Tribal and traditional clothes come in many shapes, colours and sizes. Let’s read about three of them.

Clothing in India varies depending on the local culture, religion and climate. The traditional items of clothing for Indian women are called saris. A sari is a long sheet of colourful cloth. They are worn with a blouse, a long skirt and a scarf. Saris made out ofsilk are the most elegant ones. For men, traditional clothes are the dhoti, achkan or bandh gala. A dhoti is a white or colourful strip of cotton. This traditional dress is mainly worn by the men in villages. An achkan is a long jacket. Men usually wear it during wedding ceremonies. A bandh gala is a western-style suit with trousers and a jacket. It is a formal evening suit for men.

There are typically two types of clothing that the Japanese wear: traditional Japanese clothing, such as the kimono, and Western clothing. The kimono is a traditional garment. Japanese kimonos are wrapped around the body, sometimes in several layers. While they are still in use, they are generally only worn at ceremonies, special events and funerals.

Scottish kilts are one of the most recognisable symbols of Scotland. It is a garment that resembles a skirt. It is traditionally worn by men as part of Scottish Highland dress and is now also worn by women and girls. Although the kilt is ‘the national costume’ of Scotland, you won’t see it being worn on a daily basis at the office, or in the supermarket! It’s most often worn on ‘high days and holidays’, so basically for ceremonies and special occasions. These can include weddings, funerals, family parties, festivals and more.
