TRAVELLING TO A VOLCANO
Aren’t you bored of going to beaches for your holidays every year? Why don’t you try a new destination? A very hot destination? This summer, you can try Mount Stromboli,
Sicily, Italy which is home to an active volcano. If the volcano isn’t enough for you, there will be lots of other things you can experience.
Mount Stromboli is located in Sicily. It is a very popular place with tourists. The city is accessible by boat from Milazzo, Palermo, Naples. This isn’t just any volcano. Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes on earth. It’s been active since 1932.
Eruptions are spectacular. People can spot them at night and that is why it is called the ‘lighthouse of the Mediterranean’. You need to take a guided tour to visit Stromboli’s craters. The crater is 924 metres up. Most tourists leave the town two or three hours before the sundown. This allows them to arrive at the viewpoint around sunset. It is absolutely amazing to watch the volcano’s fireworks in the darkening sky. Tourists also bring a torch with them; it’s absolutely essential for the return hike.
When they come to Stromboli, many travellers realise there are many other things to see and do. First on that list would be visiting Stromboli’s black sandy beaches. Although it may look a little strange, even scary, to swim in the black water of the sea, it is a once in a lifetime experience. Mandy Clay visited the volcano last year. “We suddenly heard a huge rumble and saw a huge burst of orange lava spraying high in the sky. Everyone screamed. We tried to watch and take photos of the eruption at the same time. It was an incredible moment!” she said. You can be sure that you’ll enjoy your time there because it is something that people don’t get to see every day!
