TRENDING TOPIC

Generation Z has brought so many new words into dictionaries. One of these is “trending topic”, also called “TT”. This term actually was brought to us by the social networking site, “Twitter”. “What trends on twitter is determined by the twitter algorithm; it is a combination of the volume of tweets on a certain topic or hashtag” said Nishant Asnani, social media expert. What helps a topic to be trending is actually depending on three factors. These factors are how much time it takes to create the volume, who the topic is about and what the main concern is. “It is important to take into consideration that all 3 factors are important for a topic to trend, 10,000 tweets on certain topic over the period of 1 year wouldn’t work for trending. However, 1,000 tweets in 1–2 hours might just qualify for the trend”, added Asnani. So a trending topic is not all about numbers of the overall tweets that are posted. There are some other certain rules as well. For example, anything that is violating twitter rules will also not be qualified as a trending topic. In addition to that, there are some keywords that are identified by Twitter. These keywords are generic and they can never be trending themselves. Some of the keywords are “beautiful, motivation, cute picture” etc. If you want to start a trending topic, you should start from selecting the right topic. It should definitely be relatable to the audience and at the same time, it should spark a conversation. Second, you should try to have a team. Having a team backing you up by retweeting or joining the conversation will definitely help you make your topic trending. And for a trending topic to work, there has to be more back-and-forth questions and answers, as well as discussions on the topic. Therefore, your topic should encourage responses. Finally, you need to tag some famous people like political party leaders, singers, actors, or even influencers on Twitter. Reaching the right people at the right time is the key to be successful.
