A Cool Castles, Long Histories The castle is built on a small island in the loch but a small bridge leads to the main entrance. Walk through the castle’s old gate and solid wooden door and take a step several hundred years back in time. In the centre of the courtyard is the well, where in the 13th century the castle inhabitants used to collect their water. Climb the steps to the first floor and visit the Great Hall where they would eat. A spiral staircase and long dark corridors lead to the six bedrooms on the upper levels where ghosts wandered as everyone was sleeping. • Purchase your tickets at the visitor centre. • Guided tours are available and take one hour.

It was getting dark and cold. Tom and Chrissie lit a fire outside the tent and Jan and Luke cooked sausages. “You know, lots of battles took place at Eilean Donan years ago”, said Tom. “The MacRae family used to take prisoners and throw them off the tower into the loch! They would set free the ones that swam to the shore .” Suddenly, they all heard a loud splash! “What was that?” asked Chrissie. She looked up at the castle. A headless ghost was walking along the castle walls! “I’ve had enough!” she screamed. “I’m going home right now!”

How were your holidays? Last week, we stayed on a really nice houseboat and visited Eilean Donan. It’s such a picturesque castle. A member of the MacRae family still lives there, actually. You’ve probably seen the castle in films – do you remember that James Bond film, The World is not Enough? They say that a ghost haunts the castle – a soldier with his head under his arm! A bit unbelievable but all good fun! Anyway, we took loads of photos of the scenery as we were driving away from the castle. The sun was shining, and the mountains of Skye were in the background .... fabulous!
