UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors

UNICEF has been around for many years. It was started in 1946 to help children in Europe and China. It was after the World War II and many children needed food and clothing to survive. Even though it was founded just to provide help after war, in 1953 the United Nations decided to keep the programme going. UNICEF now works in almost every country to maintain children’s safety, health, wellbeing, and education.

How does UNICEF function? It is funded by governments, big companies and also people. But money isn’t the only thing that UNICEF needs. They also need volunteers. The first famous person to volunteer for UNICEF was Danny Kaye in 1954. That was the start of many famous people giving their time and support UNICEF. These people are called Goodwill Ambassadors. They take part UNICEF projects and try to reach more people worldwide.

More and more famous people have become Goodwill Ambassadors. They are sports stars, singers, actors, artists, or celebrities. They all work with UNICEF to help children. Some of them are Shakira, Priyanka Chopra and Katy Perry, tennis players Serena Williams and Roger Federer, football players David Beckham and Leo Messi and many more. They all work to help people who are in need and inspire people to do the same.

Alecia Moore is a Grammy-winner singer from the U.S. Many people know her by the name Pink. In November 2015, she became a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNICEF. Her duty was to encourage physical activity in young children in the United States and at the same time raise money for food to be delivered to malnourished children all over the world.

Moore went on a trip to Haiti with her daughter and husband for UNICEF’s project. She visited Port-au-Prince and saw children who starve. She handed out food packets to them. Moore said that the trip helped her understand the importance of the programme. “When you get to see it with your own eyes and you see that something works, then it’s a lot easier to get behind and advocate for it and try to make other people aware of it,” she said. She also added that she would continue to work to make others’ lives better.
