We Might Look Like Anime Characters in 100K Years!

The future is always unknown, especially the distant future, but that doesn’t stop us from making predictions. That’s exactly what artist and researcher, Nickolay Lamm, did with help from Dr Alan Kwan, who is a computational geneticist. Their starting point was the question: “What is your prediction for how the human face will have changed in 100,000 years and why?” They created a "possible timeline" of the future and showed how the human face might look 20,000 years, 60,000 years and 100,000 years in the future. It seems that genetic engineering, adaptation to life on other planets, and wearable technology will make human faces look like something straight out of Sailor Moon or Pokemon, with huge foreheads and big eyes. Here are their predictions:

• 20,000 years: There will be some changes, but they are not too major yet. Heads will be a bit bigger because we’ll have larger brains. There will be special lenses in our eyes. They will act like Google Glass does today but in a much
  more powerful way.

• 60,000 years: We will start to see some major changes. Heads will be even larger. The eyes will grow too because humans will colonise other planets in the solar system. Humans will have to adapt to environments with less light on planets that are further from the sun. Our skin will darken and our eyelids will thicken to offer more protection against UV rays due to the fact that we will be living outside of the earth’s protective ozone layer,

• 100,000 years: We will witness the biggest changes. The most notable of them will be the big Japanese Manga-style eyes. In order to make breathing easier in new environments that may not be on the earth, we will also have larger nostrils. Men and women of the future will have perfectly symmetrical faces due to our ability to control human biology.

  Of course, it is impossible to know for sure what the future holds. But it is certain that human beings will undergo some physiological changes. And these changes, such as enlarged foreheads and eyeballs, will make us look like anime characters. Kawaii desu ne!
