Weird Sports
We usually hear about football, basketball, baseball, tennis and all the common sports on TV,
and the Internet every day. However, there are some sports that are popular but not mainstream.
You don’t hear about them on TV every day, but they attract big crowds.
Wife carrying
This sport comes from Finland. It’s really popular there.
The first Wife Carrying World Championships were in Finland in 1992. In this sport,
male competitors run a race while they are carrying a female team-mate. It may seem easy,
but running 253 metres with someone on your shoulders is really difficult.
You need to have strong muscles in your legs, chest, shoulders and arms.
Wife carrying is becoming more and more popular in the UK, the US, Russia and Australia.
Chess boxing
This sport is a mix of chess, a mental game, and boxing, a physical sport.
The first chess boxing match was in 2003 in Berlin.
The players play 6 rounds of chess and fight for 5 rounds in the boxing ring. Each round lasts 3 minutes.
Chess boxing is very popular in Germany, the United Kingdom, India and Russia. To play this sport,
you need to be able to play chess. For the boxing part, you need strong arms, legs, stomach and chest.
