WEIRD TRADITIONS

Every religion and culture has odd traditions and ceremonies that mark life’s milestones: birth, marriage, the transition to adulthood, and death. They are usually unusual for others but truly acceptable for the believers.

La Tomatina, the annual Tomato Throwing Festival which is held in the Valencian town of Buñol is a very famous Spanish festival. It is held on the last Wednesday of August and it is considered as the biggest tomato fight in the world. People throw tomatoes at each other for fun.

Another unique tradition in the Indonesian Tidong community may sound weird. It’s forbidden for the bride and the groom to use the bathroom for three days after the wedding day. People believe that if they don’t do so, their marriage may suffer from different problems such as a divorce, infidelity or the death of one of their children.

There is a bizarre ritual which has been celebrated for the last 500 years in India. Couples throw their babies off a temple and catch them in a cloth. People sing and dance during the ritual, which is usually held in December. They believe this brings health, prosperity and luck to the babies.
