Welcome to Nairobi
A great place for both tourists and locals, The Carnivore was voted one of the top restaurants in the world. It is an experience for all the senses.
As you enter the restaurant, the smell of charred meat and fragrant smoke greets you. When you get inside, the first thing you see is a board with a list of what appears to be every African wild animal you can think of. This is your menu. The next thing you see, and hear, is the huge circular stone Masai barbecue with countless spits of roasting meat. The Masai people of Kenya and Tanzania are a nomadic tribe and are reputed to have the best cattle in the world. Considering the fact that they claim to have the best cattle in the world, you would expect that they know how to cook it superbly —and they do. On the barbecue there are joints of meat on Masai spears roasting gently over burning coals. If you look closely, you will see over twenty varieties of meat sizzling away.
The food at The Carnivore changes on daily basis. The smell alone at the restaurant will make your mouth water and you certainly won’t be disappointed by the taste of what’s on the menu.
Not only is the food unusual, but the service at The Carnivore is, too. When you take your seat, you will be given a plate, napkin, knife and fork, and a flag. The flag is very important. When you are ready to eat, you put your flag upright and the waiters know that you are ready to be served. They come to your table waving huge Masai spears with hunks of meat. Your waiter will plonk the end of the spear on your cast iron plate and carve away. When you have eaten your fill, simply lower your flag and the waiter will leave you alone.
The Carnivore is an eat-as-much-as-you-can restaurant, with starters, desserts and coffee, as well as, the meat, of course, all included in the price. Also included are an amazingly lively atmosphere, wonderful music and friendly, helpful staff. In my opinion, if you go and eat there, you won’t be disappointed (unless you are a vegetarian, that is).
