WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE GREEN?

Green bags, green clothes, green cars, green energy, green everything! What does it mean to be green? Being “green” is a new way to say, “helping the environment”. It is good to help our environment. Think about how much trash we make every day: plastic water bottles, paper bags and boxes from fast food, and Styrofoam coffee cups. Also, letters and papers in the mail, plastic wrap to cover the food, and plastic bags from the grocery store. Wow, that’s a lot of trash! Also, think about how much water we use: taking a shower, brushing our teeth, washing the dishes, and washing the car. Also, water for the grass and flowers, and water used by industries and businesses. There are many ways we can be green! We can make less trash and use less water. For example, when we go to the store, we can bring our own bags instead of taking a plastic bag. Or, if you do take a plastic bag, find another way to use it again. We can buy products that have less plastic or paper wrapping. For water, we can take a shorter shower. We can also save the rainwater in buckets to give water to the flowers and plants later. Another way to help is to use “green” energy. That means, use energy from the wind, water, or sun. It also means use less energy. Remember to turn off the lights and other electronics when you are not using them. Also, you can buy products that use less energy. There are some types of light bulbs that use less energy and can help you save money too! April 22nd is Earth Day. It’s a special day to remember our Earth and think of ways to help our beautiful planet. We can all do something to help every day. What will you do?
