WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TEXT AND WALK?
The number of texting-walking related injuries has gone up a lot since 2005. “Parents already teach their children to look both ways when crossing the street," says Dr. Nasar from Ohio University. "They should also teach them to put away their mobile phones when walking and crossing a street.”
Researchers found that more pedestrians get injured while texting than drivers or car passengers. We all think walking is pretty easy, but we actually have to concentrate on many things at the same time. People pay more attention to their phones while walking, so they forget how to walk properly. Pedestrians bump into other people and walls, fall over things in the street, they walk into cars, and they even fall into holes or down stairs.
A professor has claimed that walking isn't simple. He has stated a number of reasons why texting is dangerous for pedestrians. First of all, they cannot see the road. Secondly, they look at their phone screen instead of their feet on the street. A final reason is that their minds are somewhere else and not on thinking about walking safely. The professor had over 6,000 patients visit his hospital last year because of injuries that happened while texting. According to Dr. Nasar, head injuries are the worst cases he gets. When a car hits a pedestrian and they are thrown into the air, there is nothing to protect the head, so the damage can be very serious indeed.
