What is Halloween
1. Do you know any festivals or celebration in order to scare people and have fun? The answer is ‘Halloween’. It is a celebration that happens on the 31st of October. It originally came from a religious day, which is on the 1st of November and is called All Saints Day, so Halloween is the night before this.
2. People started to celebrate ‘Halloween’ in the USA. Then, this celebration spread to many other countries. People think that on that day, especially at night, monsters come out. Many people also believe that the old souls can come back if they find a body to stay in, so they wear scary costumes to make the spirits go away.
3. Halloween is also very famous for costume parties. Today people, especially children, enjoy Halloween costume parties. They wear scary masks and dress up as witches or ghosts. On 31st October, children in scary costumes knock on doors and when the door opens they say ‘trick or treat!’ to get some sweets from neighbours. If they don’t get any, they do something bad to people such as throwing eggs or scaring them. The other traditions of Halloween are decorating houses with horror characters such as spiders, bats, black cats and pumpkins. People carve big pumpkins to make lanterns and decorate around their houses. Today Halloween is a popular festival and people celebrate it all over the world.
