WHEN THERE WEREN’T ANY DINOSAURS

Hundreds of millions of years ago, when dinosaurs lived, our Earth was a different place.
There were different plants and animals around. Scientists study the changes on Earth and in its atmosphere.
They give different names to different periods at that time. Here are two
important periods:

Carboniferous
This period was between 358 million years ago and 298.9 million years ago.
It was 60 million years long. During this
time, there weren’t any dinosaurs on Earth. There were lots of plants.
There was a lot of oxygen in the atmosphere, so
the insects of this period were huge.
For example, there was
a dragonfly that was 75 centimeters long.

Permian
This period was after the Carboniferous period. During this period,
there were amphibians (animals that live both in water
and on land) everywhere,
but there weren’t any dinosaurs
yet. At the end of this period,
95% of all the animals on Earth
were dead. After about 30 million years,
there were the first
dinosaurs on Earth.
