Where are the honeybees going?
Are you afraid of bees? Do you run away when you see one near you? When bees sting, it really hurts and can be dangerous for people with allergies. Do you know how they are important to humans? They fly around flowers, plants and trees with pollen on their legs. Animals and insects who carry pollen are called pollinators. Fruit, nuts, and vegetables need these pollinators. Honeybees are pollenators. But, have you ever seen a honeybee recently? The answer is probably no because, unfortunately, they are disappearing in some parts of the world.
We don’t know why they are disappearing. Scientists think that it is because of global warming. This is a very big problem and it is called colony collapse disorder. Imagine there is no more fruit to eat. How about a world without almonds, nuts, or cherries? Without honeybees, food prices would go up and would become unaffordable. Some of the biggest ice cream companies in the world donate money to researchers to help find the reason and solution for the disappearance of honeybees. The University of California has a garden called the Haven. This garden tries to attract people’s attention to this problem and teaches people how to plant properly to get more pollens. People can support the researchers and can help scientists save honeybees.
