Who Did It ?

Mr Campbell lived in a large castle. He was very rich but didn’t have many friends because he was very selfish and a bit cruel. The only people that he talked to were his staff—the people who worked for him. One sad day, a member of the staff murdered Mr Campbell. The detective who was chosen to solve the case read the statements from the four members of staff. Can you guess who murdered Mr Campbell?

Maid: ‘I walked upstairs and knocked on the door. There was no answer so I went into the bedroom. I entered the room and screamed immediately. I can’t believe someone murdered Mr Campbell!’

Butler: ‘I was collecting the morning newspapers. I heard the maid scream, so I ran upstairs. When I got to the bedroom, I turned on the light because it was so dark. Then, I saw Mr Campbell on the floor and the maid was standing outside crying. I always argued with him, but I didn’t do this.’

Cook: ‘I was in the kitchen. It was Sunday, so I was cooking a big breakfast for Mr Campbell and all the staff. When I heard the maid scream, I called the police and rushed upstairs to see what was happening. This was my last day because I didn’t like working here.’

Gardener: ‘I was sleeping late because it was Sunday. I heard the maid scream, so I grabbed a stick and ran upstairs. When I entered the room I was shocked. I dropped the stick. Then the cook came into the room and started shouting. I think it was the butler. Yesterday, I saw him and Mr Campbell. They were arguing.’
