Why small talk is important

Why small talk is important

I don’t really like small talks. People who come to me out of nowhere and talk to me about the weather sometimes seem stupid or creepy! But why do people tend to initiate small talks with others? Why can’t they just sit quietly by themselves in a shared space or in a public area until they leave? Because small talk is important and has lots of benefits. Below are a few reasons why having small talk with people is good.

(1) .................................. Small talk is free, but it leads to results. It is like investing in something for free and often getting something from it. At the very least, it can make you feel good after the exchange, and in some circumstances, it can earn you a job with a salary of $20,000.

(2) .................................. This has actually been scientifically proved. A study at the University of Michigan found that your problem-solving power can increase by having more social interactions with other people. This is because some social interactions encourage us to try and read the other person’s mind, which can improve our cognitive ability.

(3) .................................. Being liked is very important, especially for those who want to have an impact on others. Your attempt to initiate small talk with someone is a sign of your respect for them. Most people also enjoy the positive attention of a stranger when they least expect it.
