Why you don’t need a degree to be successful

Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Lady Gaga are all successful people but haven’t got college degrees. About 70% of Americans don’t have a bachelor’s degree; however, a good portion of those people are leading successful lives at the moment. This doesn’t mean that you don’t need college at all. Instead, it means that a college degree isn’t a must if you want to be successful in life. There are three main reasons why this is the case.

1. We have online education.

In the past, going to college and securing a master’s degree could guarantee a successful lifetime career. However, with how the economy works and the fast pace of scientific advancement, a degree doesn’t always lead to success today. You could end up needing a management degree for the work you want to do, but you should also consider spending four years of your life and going under big student debt. Do you really need a four-year degree to be a computer programmer? Or could you take online classes to learn web development?

2. Lots of jobs still pay six figures without a 4-year degree.

Nowadays, you don’t really have to go to college to earn six figures. An air traffic controller doesn’t need a degree, but after a few years, the position can earn him or her six figures. Also, real estate brokers and technical writers have very high earning potential, yet no degree is required for these jobs. A lot of college dropouts leave college to become high earners since they see how university wastes their time.

3. In four years, your degree won’t be useful any more.

Going to college is a risk. You’re investing your precious time and money into a degree that may become obsolete by the time you’re ready to use it. Moreover, even if your degree is still useful and can help you get job offers, it doesn’t mean you’re fully ready for the job market. Trends in technology and business come and go quickly, and so it’s hard to keep up with changing trends, especially when you’re still dealing with textbooks and courses that haven’t been updated for the most recent changes.
