WORLD WONDERS THREATENED
Winters are getting warmer each year. Summers are much hotter and drier. Researchers say what we call “extreme weather” will become normal in the future. Water shortages will influence more than 1.5 billion people from all walks of life globally, because both the rich and the poor need water. New research show that, it will only get worse. Global warming now is a threat to some of the Earth's natural wonders, too.
Scientist predict that ocean temperatures will rise by at least 1 degree Celsius. The colour of the coral reefs around the world will fade and they will die. Australia's Great Barrier Reef, one of the world's natural wonders, will completely disappear. In the Amazonian rain forest, most of the trees will die, and more than half of the Amazons will become dry savannah. The water temperature of the Amazon River will increase by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. In Chile and Argentina, melting glaciers will cause the climate to get drier. This will cause more forest fires to start in the area.
Some of the damage cannot be fixed. However research also says that the damage in the coral reefs and other ecosystems could be restricted. Luckily, top politicians of the world and environmental organizations are becoming a little more aware of the problem and they are more open to discussions on the changing climate.
