WORLDS APART

WORLDS APART

It is strange how two photos can have the same elements, yet portray a completely different message. These two photos fundamentally contain the same elements, and yet they are worlds apart. They both show tents and temporary housing. They both have children and families in them. They were both taken outside and it seems like it is a nice, sunny day in both of them.

However, it is how these people came to be in these circumstances that sets them apart so drastically. Without having any context, it is difficult to say for certain what the stories behind them are. But, we can, at least to some extent, guess the situations that are portrayed in both photos.

In picture 1, the family have decided to go camping to have a weekend away, to have fun and relax. They are all looking at a map and they seem relaxed and calm. In picture 2, the family look like they have been forced into this situation due to war and violence. Nobody seems very happy and they are probably not having any fun and do not feel very pleased to be there. Their homes may have been destroyed or become too dangerous to stay in. They most likely have no other option than to flee and try to start a new life somewhere else, or at least to wait somewhere else until their homeland becomes safe once again.
