YELLOWSTONE

YELLOWSTONE

I’ve always thought that Yellowstone is the biggest park in the world. When I first visited the park last summer, I was amazed by it. The park is bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined, and it takes hours to drive across the park. But Yellowstone isn’t the biggest park in the world. Wrangell- St. Elias National Park, in Alaska, is much bigger than Yellowstone, but still these two parks are tiny comparisons of the champ. If you want to see the world’s biggest park, you should head north to Greenland.

In 1974, the Greenlandic Council decided to govern the uninhabited part of northern Greenland as a national park. Today, the park covers 375.000 square miles. That’s bigger than France and Venezuela. In fact, there are only 30 countries on Earth larger than this single park. It’s called Northeast Greenland National Park.

The permanent population of the park is almost zero, but the non-human population is much bigger with polar bears, hares, foxes, walruses.

It’s hard to get to Northeast Greenland National Park at all. Only about 500 people visit the area as they stop by during their Arctic cruises. This beautiful park is worth a trip only if you don’t get lonely easily...
