Chemicals in your food

Do you read the information on the back of the products you buy at the supermarket?
Some of the ingredients are normal; you know them. But you can’t even read or say the name of some other ingredients.
These chemicals can be dangerous to your body if you
consume big amounts of them.

Food companies use canthaxanthin in egg yolks, the yellow part of the egg,
because sometimes the yolk isn’t very yellow.
Some customers think that the egg is bad if the yolk isn’t yellow enough.
If you ingest a lot of this chemical for a long period of time, it can damage your eyes.

High-fructose corn syrup is a sweetener. It means that it makes your food taste sweet.
It also makes the foods look fresh. It’s not harmful to your body if you eat a small amount of it.
The problem is that high-fructose corn syrup is in a lot of the foods we eat every day.
It’s used in beverages, processed foods, cereals and baked goods like bread and cakes.
It’s on the list of additives that can cause heart attacks.

Scientists made artificial colours to be used in foods back in the early 1900s.
These artificial colours are used to make your food look fresh and sometimes fancy.
There are in sweets for children, cereals, drinks, ice cream, yoghurt, etc.
Over time, some of these colours were banned because the caused cancer.
