Do Computers Affect Our Health?
Many people are now worried that teenagers today aren’t doing enough exercise in their free time. The popularity of computers, mobile phones and modern technology mean young people are spending less time doing physical activities like sport and more time looking at their tablets’ and mobile phones’ screens. Lack of exercise causes health problems later in adult life. According to a recent survey in the UK, some teenagers are using the internet for 16 hours or more per week. Similarly, in China, teenagers are becoming addicted to the internet. The Chinese government is so concerned about this and they are thinking to restrict the number of hours that teenagers can spend online and encourage them to do more sport in their free time.
As well as health problems, computers bring also some cultural issues along. Thanks to technological devices, teenagers are spending less time with their families and friends and more time on their own. When teenagers are surfing on the internet or text a lot, they are isolating themselves and they aren’t learning how to socialize and appropriate manners in society.
Some people think the opposite. They argue that the internet is a platform where young people can chat, talk about themselves; their hobbies, dislikes, music tastes, fashion styles, etc. In fact, the internet can actually help teens build and maintain relationships.
The survey concluded that the internet might be a positive thing as long as it is used cautiously and wisely.
